Anisha Steephen (they/them) is a nationally recognized political economist and policy strategist working to address structural economic inequality and build a fair multiracial democracy. Their work focuses on finance, housing, energy, and tax policy, and on how public investment shapes economic power.
Anisha's writing has appeared in TIME, Barron's, Crain's New York Business, and Notes on the Crises, and they are a regular commentator on local Fox and NBC affiliates, speaking to the affordability crisis, consumer sentiment, and what is driving household costs. Their report Rent Regulation as Financial Regulation was published by the Roosevelt Institute in 2026.
Anisha served as the first Senior Policy Advisor for Racial Equity at the U.S. Department of the Treasury under the leadership of Secretary Janet L. Yellen. In this role, they played a key part in implementing the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act—the largest clean energy investment in U.S. history—to ensure that economically underserved people, businesses, and communities benefit from these transformative laws. Before that, they spent a decade in economic development finance. They are currently a fellow at the Roosevelt Institute, the Economic Security Project, and Common Wealth.
They hold degrees from Columbia University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and are based in New York City.
